How the speed test works

  1. Measure idle latency

A set of tiny requests to Cloudflare’s speed test server gives the latency as their median and the jitter as the change between them.

  2. Step up downloads and uploads

Files grow from 100 KB and stop growing once one request takes over a second; total data is up to about MB.

  3. Record latency under load

Latency is measured again while downloading and uploading; the more it rises above idle latency, the more video calls and games stutter. On a line so fast that a transfer ends within 0.25 seconds it cannot be measured and shows “—”.

Reading the result

  • MbpsMegabits per second; divide by 8 for megabytes per second.
  • msMilliseconds; lower latency and jitter are better.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the result differ from my plan’s speed?

The result depends on Wi-Fi signal, device performance, other apps in use and the route to the test server. Through a VPN or proxy, it measures the speed after the proxy.

Who receives data during the test?

During the test your browser exchanges test data directly with Cloudflare’s speed test server, speed.cloudflare.com; see the Privacy Policy.
