ASN Lookup and IP Network Operator Guide

AS2914 is the public number of the network announcing an IP route. In IPLense, the ASN and Operator fields identify that routed network and the organization behind it.

An ASN identifies the routed network

The Internet is made of independently managed networks. Each network can announce IP prefixes and decide how it exchanges traffic with others. An Autonomous System Number, or ASN, is its number in the global routing system.

A carrier may announce many ranges under one ASN. Companies, universities, cloud providers, and content networks can operate their own ASNs as well.

Operator names the organization behind the network

Operator is the organization associated with the current ASN or routed prefix. It may be an access provider, backbone carrier, datacenter operator, or enterprise network.

The displayed organization is the one associated with the route or current prefix.

Registration, routing, and use can name different companies

Registration records can name the holder of the address space while ASN data names the network announcing it. Both are useful because they describe different parts of the same route.
